Wisdom teeth extraction

Normally, wisdom teeth start to emerge through the gums during the late teenage years or early twenties. By this time, your other permanent teeth have usually already settled in their positions, which can result in limited space for the wisdom teeth to fully erupt. Consequently, wisdom teeth may grow at an angle, become impacted, or only partially emerge.

When it becomes necessary to have your wisdom teeth extracted, you can have confidence in the exceptional care provided by Nicholson Road Dental Centre. We offer the option of sedation, enabling the procedure to be conducted within our dental surgery rather than a hospital environment.

Ensure that you plan sufficient time for recovery after the surgery. Expect to experience swelling and soreness for 2-3 days, so it's important to schedule the procedure with enough time away from your regular activities.

Keep the surgical wounds clean by rinsing with a simple saltwater solution. The stitches used are designed to promote faster healing, reduce bleeding, and minimize the risk of infection.

Adjust your diet to include soft and easily consumed foods such as ice cream, yogurt, jelly, custard, soups, and stews. These types of foods require minimal chewing and are more comfortable to eat.

Follow the post-operative instructions regarding medication, including pain relief and antibiotics, as directed.

additional tips to help with your recovery

To alleviate swelling, bruising, and discomfort, apply ice packs to the outside of your mouth for short durations, several times a day, during the first two days.

  • Avoid consuming any food or drink for at least two hours after your surgery. Once the bleeding has stopped, gradually increase your intake of water and soft foods.

  • Minimize talking for at least two hours after the surgery. Rest and keep your jaw still as much as possible.

  • Avoid touching the extraction site or wound to reduce the risk of infection.

  • Bite gently on the gauze pad provided by your dentist to help clot the blood.

  • Do not drink with a straw for at least a week as sucking can dislodge the blood clot from the socket.

  • Your body may feel exhausted after the surgery, so prioritize getting plenty of rest to aid in the healing process. Avoid lying flat by propping your head up with a pillow to reduce swelling.

  • Wait at least 12 hours before rinsing your mouth. Afterward, gently rinse your mouth with warm saltwater five or six times a day.

  • Smoking is not recommended during the recovery period.

  • Avoid engaging in physical exercise until you have fully recovered.

  • Be gentle when brushing your teeth in the days following the surgery to avoid dislodging the blood clot, which can lead to dry socket. Dry socket can prolong the recovery time and result in infection and severe pain for up to six days.

  • Your dentist will prescribe medication to help with wisdom teeth pain relief during your recovery process. Follow their instructions accordingly.

  • Choose soft and gentle foods that are easy to eat to ensure a smooth recovery process without complications. Consider options like yogurt, softly scrambled eggs, pumpkin soup, avocado, fruit smoothies, and porridge. It is best to avoid soft drinks, caffeinated beverages, alcohol, spicy foods, and crunchy or crumbly foods that may become lodged in the extraction site.
